While writing this essay, as a writer, I have gradually got to know
that Mr. Nishino’s wartime extraordinal hardships are all factors of the past, meaningful struggles of our nation. As was described in the old days’ Manyoshu, Japan was and is to be regarded as a nation of good fortune, but the reality is not so easily overwhelmed.

Tomioka Junior High School was established after WW2, when people were all suffered from poverty. In the wooden-built, one-story white school houses we were instructed by ex-soldiers or young, military-experienced stern male teachers, and epidemics were prevailed everywhere in our area, too.

Mr. Nishino was a teacher of Japanese language and literature, and very stern, therefore, I remember, I often took very rebellious attitude and asked some, captious questions on a poet and poetess like Toson Shimazaki and Akiko Yosano.

In our age, say, in our 40s, 50s, 60s our nerves turned friendly and mild, and each time I published new novel and essay book, I sent it to him. Mr. Nishino gave me nice comments and when I went back to my hometown, he came to pick me up in his car and took me to the museum of tea-ceremony utensils. But while driving, he was looking back to the past old days, whose subject was on my classmate. He was an orphan, helpless lonesome boy. Miserable but we did not know how to give benevolent words, when we had so many patients of ropical fever and epidemic disease. We could not afford to either give good care nor treat him or her. It was what we called post-war Japan. Mr. Nishino, having much experience of such disaster, while he was at college, could make it natural to decide helping them.

To him our relationship was one of the nice talks, neither complicated nor troublesome but comparatively easy topic to worry about.

Mr. Nishino attended our class reunion and gave nice, nostalgic talks but though strongly-built he at last passed away recently. Tother with my old bunch mentioned in the last page, I paid a visit to his home for praying, when his wife talked his young days experience during the last war. It was so impressive.

Nowadays however we are in the midst of Coronavirus pandemic. This overwhelming natural disaster has brought us lots of lessons but, as you are already aware, postwar Japan’s government has always been in the lack of leadership policy and, this time, too, I was afraid of the government would be at a loss having no idea of how to solve such bio-terror type epidemic. Medical malpractice should be avoided but the government itself is ignorant on this sense and as the result they have come to be convinced that the only way to get rid of or along with this virus is not to cure patients but to let the nation keep social distance wearing masks and/or shields. Their accountability seems to be meaningless. Historically, such a phenomenon should be considered a waystation generally seen in the lost government.

Let us look back again to the Meiji restoration period, when old Samurai Japan has inaugurated to be a nation of industrialism. 70 years after her opening ports to west European nations and America, Japan always tried to pay the best attention to protect our land and its independency, but the result was miserable. Ruins, ruins, ruins, everywhere. But, ironical to say, it brought us ethnic independency avoiding European colonization. Taking this history into consideration, I could point out that Mr. Nishino’s painstaking personal days symbolically followed the same track as our country did.

Big Earthquake
December 7, 1944. Tokai Big Earthquake. M7.9. Died 998. Fell-down houses 26,000. Factory chimney broken down. Tokai and Nagoya area, with 60% weapon industry was so frequently attacked by such air bombardments.

Air raids in Nagoya area
December 13, 1944. American air force began big air raid, sending 80 bomber B29 troops. They attacked Nagoya city area so frequently, day and night, so violent, Aichi Clock Industry and Nagoya Castle were crushed and burnt to ashes. In Nagoya prefecture there used to be more than 60% military crafts industry of Japan, and some B29 was crushed by Kamikaze attack and fell down together. This was very piteous tragedy, not a matter to be boasted about.

On May 17th of 1945, dawn, 468 B29 bombers came and our Kasadera dormitory was burnt to ashes and our belongings were all burnt, which we watched from the factory. This was the last day. We were given some rice and cloths and came back to Osaka. On the way back, air raid attacked us repeatedly and I saw at Maizuru Park lots of the dead and the wounded. The spectacle was so miserable that I didn’t know how to depict them at all. When I at last arrived at my home, my parents, watching me in shabby rug, asked who I was. So thin, so dirty, nobody could identify me. After coming back home, my classmates were ordered again to work at factory, and I was ordered to come back to the Osaka Daiichi Teachers’ College, and lodging in the classroom we were engaged to cultivate playground to grow sweet potato until August 15, 1945, the very day when US-Japan War was over.

9.Dispondency after the War

Everybody after the war was filled with despondency. Mr. Nishino wrote as follows.

It was not until the war was over when we regained the proper position of studying freely as a student, but the society of our country was too chaotic to do so and those under terrible condition could do nothing but only eat and drink to keep our body alive. Further more after the war two older brother returned back to Japan from China. One is from the Northern China, another from the Southern. This caused food shortage, and we developed deep in the hillside area to get paddy field. Such bad condition lasted till the graduation year, viz. March, 1948. My young days, the most important period for studying were totally lost. War was apt to deprive us of our dream and hope.

Mr.Nishino in addition, mentioned that thanks to both elder brothers hard work, I could go to college, and this sense of obligation was so severe that I had to feel very severe hardships. He had no chance to find any hope of his own aspiration.

Even under such severe hardships, Mr. Nishino never gave up aspiration. Aspiration, in his case, was a self-help independency, never giving up hope to the future, and his emotion actually opened big flower not only in his heart but in our heart. We are apt to be inclined into indolence, but I would like to keep in touch with him deeply enough to encourage myself in our heart.
